Technical Writing in Agile Scrum

Technical Writing in Agile Scrum is a three-course training series for Technical Writers, also to support the Product Owners, Scrum Masters, and Developers with whom they work. The series provides tailored professional development in three stages:

  • Agile Scrum Foundations for Technical Writers
  • Agile Scrum in Practice for Technical Writers
  • Agile Scrum Mastery for Technical Writers

The research is complete and the series is moving into single-sourced production. PDF manuscripts are available.

Project Summary

Technical Writing in Agile Scrum is a three-course e-learning series I designed to help technical writers move beyond documentation support into full participation on Agile Scrum teams — progressing from foundational concepts, through day-to-day practice, to strategic mastery. Each course shares a consistent learner profile and instructional design approach, built as one coherent series rather than three standalone modules. The project sits at the intersection of my professional focus: technical writing, e-learning design, and Agile Scrum.

Course 1: Foundations (Manuscript)

This course lays out the foundations of Agile Scrum through the lens of the Technical Writer — reframing the role from a downstream documentation resource into a full contributing member of the Scrum team. Explore the Agile Manifesto, the three pillars of Scrum empiricism, Agile vs. Waterfall thinking, and the shift-left mindset, grounded throughout in a continuous case study following a realistic software team scenario through realistic sprint work. Course 1 of a three-part series.

Course 2: In Practice (Manuscript)

This course moves from foundations into daily practice, walking Technical Writers through Scrum's artifacts and five events — Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Review, and Retrospective — plus how to estimate and plan documentation work using Story Points, Planning Poker, velocity tracking, and Progressive Elaboration. Grounded throughout in a realistic documentation epic worked sprint by sprint. Course 2 of a three-part series.

Course 3: Mastery (Manuscript)

This course advances Technical Writers from practice to mastery — covering acceptance criteria, Definition of Done, epics, and increments, while reframing each core role through a governance lens: Information PM, Technical Parity, Quality Guardian, and Value and ROI Gate. Builds resilience for real-world friction through a crisis-sprint capstone case study and a cross-course certification exam. Course 3 of a three-part series.

Services Overview

One practitioner — Five closely inter-related disciplines

Documentation that releases with (or ahead of) the product or solution — not weeks afterward

01

Technical Writing for Software & API Documentation

Enterprise-grade reference documentation, onboarding guides, user manuals, release notes, and online help systems — written for developers, network administrators, and end-user audiences in equal measure, supporting the full spectrum of content delivery strategies.

02

E-Learning & Instructional Design

Adaptive learning programs, Articulate Storyline and Rise course development, full storyboarding and narration scripting, LMS administration, and learner-centered content design grounded in adult learning theory.

03

Agile Scrum & Docs-as-Code

Documentation embedded directly inside sprint cycles — using Git, GitHub, Jira, Confluence, and CI/CD pipeline integration. Built to align publication with software release schedules, not lag behind them.

04

Content Strategy & UX Writing

Style guide development and deployment, plain language standards, audience-centered content architecture, and UX writing for enterprise software and web platforms — designed to reduce the burdens of Technical Support and improve user outcomes at scale.

05

AI-Augmented Workflows

Applied proficiency across 12 AI platforms — including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Midjourney, and AI video and image generation platforms — integrated into technical writing, content planning, research, and e-learning development as formal professional practice, not experimentation.

◆"Areas of AI augmention emphasize subject matter research, audience research, with personally directed content design, development, and delivery. Areas of AI assistance emphasize automation of recurring tasks, and synthesized processing of fragmented content sources for my initial evaluation. Personal initiation, administration, and governance of all AI integration and outcomes remain my responsibility in all cases."
